The Damage of the Evangelical Church to Queer People
There is increasing evidence that shows the evangelical church has done particular harm to people who identify themselves in affirming ways. In 2022, Hollier, Clifton, and Smith-Mary published a paper entitled Mechanisms of Religious Trauma Amongst Queer People in Australia's Evangelical Churches. The researchers interviewed individuals from the LGBTQI plus community in Australia who had spent at least two years in an evangelical church. They found trauma was caused by having their identity mischaracterized or encountering misinformation or stigma.
