Working with machines was as much a mathematical endeavour as it was an artistic one. You had to be structured because you would tell them machines to play something you were conducting. I saw Blue Monday more of a machine and the different rhythms within it are different gear cogs. So you've got some eights, hi-ats that are going... Then you've got triplets that are going ... And then you've got the beat... That's the engine. And it's like a load of gears, that's the way I see it"
