Mao's Motive for a New Deal With the United States

China would probably benefit even more than the United States in closer, foreign-American ties because they're directly threatened by the Soviet Union. I think this is perhaps Mao's most immediate motivation for seeking or at least reciprocating the American interests in the relationship. Finally, and very importantly for the Chinese side, there is Taiwan. The United States was perhaps the key reason why the Chinese Civil War had not concluded in a year or so after 1949 with a Chinese Communist invasion of Taiwan.
