Kylon's Attempt to Overthrow the Athenian Government
Kylon and his supporters were cornered on the Acropolis. After a long siege, when food and water began to run out, Kylon and his brother managed to escape in the middle of the night. The rest of his co-conspirators were forced to take refuge in an early temple to Athena at Polius. They could not be attacked because it was considered sacrilege to do so. Herodotus reports that Kylon's supporters were persuaded by the Archons to leave the temple and stand trial after being assured their lives would be spared.
