In 18 27, a young farmer named joseph smith was visited by an angel. Smith uncovered a set of ancient gold plates. They were written in strange characters in an ancient language. god gave smith divine power to translate the plates into english. This translation became the book of mormon,. A sacred text revered by members of the latter day saint movement, often known as mormons. To day, there are roughly 16 million m Mormons world wide. Most are members of the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints.
