We need those physical emotional mental connections in the real world, not behind an avatar on the screen. What we connect with in a story is you and so it doesn't mean you have to go out and share the story of the worst breakup that you've ever had in your life. The moment that you are a storyteller, you cannot avoid being vulnerable. And so it's worth thinking through strategically the level of vulnerability you want to bring. You don't need to bring it all, but you probably need to bring at least a little bit more than you're bringing now.
