The Role of Theories in the Complexity of Our Moment
Matthew Joseph: Theory can be very powerful. But once it accumulates an excess of power or symbolic meaning across different groups, it becomes difficult to control. If you're a strong proponent of any of these theories and practices, it may be hard for you to accept that they have all become many things to many people. He says this explains why there is often so much disconnect between the claims of proponents and those hostile towards them.
