The E Pentatonic Scale, It's One of the Simplest Scales
Piano sound is deliberately layered in a way that resists the groove of the song, so it's out of time. Both piano parts are keeping centered around the E pentatonic scale. The two notes that we've removed from the scale also remove any half steps from the scale. So whatever note is ringing during whatever chord is pretty much going to sound fine and you get this nice out of focus effect rhythmically.
