Jason Kuznicki: For the most part our ancestors were sedentary subsistence agriculturalists who paid their taxes because they were terrified of their lords. And these are the people who gave us a lot of our cultural assumptions on a really deep level. Modernity is weird in history and most of history looked very different from it. A lot of modern political culture is simply about the difference between that traditional way of life and those that might be more fit to a more prosperous society.
