Carry Me Back to Old Virginia
Carry me back was written in 1878 by a black singer and composer called James A. Bland. Until 1997, it was also the state song of Virginia. Marion Anderson sings in a European style with European orchestration. The lyrics repeat one of the primary racist fantasies of the South that free black people long for the certainties of the plantation.
