Etherium is a 'trustworthy' computer in the cloud that can run any application. It trades off ormante in exchange for security and decentralization. Users own the network, so if someone built the next facebook application on top of etherium, they could engineer in such a way that the users actually owned that application. But there are substantial limitations to this system - it's going to move at the speed of roughly one computer per second until we get into some other form of scaling.
