Hoshu is considered a transitional writer who has a huge amount to say in inditing the chinese society of his time. His prose style is, in some ways, actually looking back to the old confucian style of classical writing as much as it looks towards the modern. He wrote stories like uncle congig, which has a sort of slightly scathing, slightly mocking account of those old scholars we mentioned beforewho had been put out of work by the abolition of the examination system. Hoshu was at the head of the literary part of that movement.
