The Role of Glucocorticoids in Spinal Cord Injury

Methoprednisone is the only treatment that has been suggested to improve neurological outcomes in patients with acute non-penetrating traumatic spinal cord injury. The use of glucocorticoids after a spinal cord injury was found to reduce edema, prevent intracellular potassium depletion and actually improve neurological recovery. In 2013, based on the available guidance, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurologicalsurgeons stated that the use of glucopressors in acute spinal cord injury is not recommended.
