What Happened in the Middle Ages?
Before the end of the Middle Ages, in the late 14th and throughout the 15th century. The plague pandemic killed off one third to one half of everybody. In England, especially the English landlords were now faced with a revenue crisis. They abolished servum, which was basically a semi slave holding institution. When these wealthier peasants went from farming 20 to 30 acres to farming hundreds of acres of land, they suddenly got the incentive to specialize in the production of a single crop.
