Damon Valary was heir to the throne. His firstborn was rainies, the queen who got passed over. Nina suggests that Damon thought ahead and was like, hmm, my daughter might get passed over. If I give her a really powerful husband, the lord of the tides, that's less likely to happen. It still happened, but it was less likely to happening.
