Franklin's Slavery to Freedom

Slavery to Freedom was published in 1947 by Knopf. It's a survey of African American history written by a black historian. In 1967 when it's published in the paperback sales shoot through the roof. The book is selling tens of thousands of copies a year in the late 1960s and early 1970s. And I think in some senses what we see there is the power of the paperback as a technology for the transmission of popular history.
