You need to fight for the feedback, even when it gets really uncomfortable and painful. There's a great framework that shared in kimscott's book, radical candor. The way it goes is situation behavior impact. It insures your staying humble in your conversations. And by the way, this applies to giving praise also, not just critical feedback.
