The Case of the Amistad
In 1888, under a compromised provision of the Constitution, it was now legally possible to outlaw the slave trade. Jefferson proposed to Congress that they do so and they did. Slave plantation owners continued to bring enslaved people into the country through third party means. The Amistad was commandeered after an uprising on the ship by slaves who overthrew Spanish crew.
