There is a folk history that they would be the direct ancestors of contemporary ucranians. That was a standard narrative in the nineteenth century russian empire. But if looking at the archaeological evidence, gets probably much closer to the realities of the emergence of the key on ros than attempts to present it as a full scale state. It's always something like a modernization of wat what existed thousands years ago, one thousand to be precise. The very state appeared as a trade company of this norse from scandinavia who were known in western europe as wickins.
