The History of the Spartan Women

Non-Spartates could not hold public office, nor was it likely that a woman would be given in marriage to someone who lost their citizenship. Only the child of two legitimate Spartiates could become a citizen. Methones sprang from illegitimate unions of Spartiate males and hellot females. Spartan women were very much different than all other Greek women. They underwent an extensive formal education cycle at the state's expense.
