God chooses Abraham and his family not because they're like great moral examples. Most of the stories in Genesis are about them screwing up and putting God's plan into jeopardy. He's chosen to commit himself to flawed creatures like ourselves. At the end of the story God ends up being and through Jesus the only human that could pull it off. The faithful human he made us all to be but that we failed to be.
