The Paradox of Pity and Fear

Aristotle defines both pity and fear as species of pain. The paradox lies in the fact that Aristotle is saying tragedy causes us to feel a certain way. You might believe that you can, in fact, feel both pleasure and pain at the same time. But where that's most plausible, it's going to be plausible because the pleasure and the pain are directed in different directions.
