The Importance of Love in Relationships

In your column for Modern Love, you wrote about beginning a romantic relationship or a sexual relationship with your best friend. I'm curious if that's the first time that you stepped out of that kind of idea of who you'd been before in terms of being straight or being with men. A few years ago, I was in the hospital for an undiagnosable parasite that was literally eating me from the inside out. And when I saw these amazing people standing by my bedside, I thought, wow, all of these people are my partners."
