The Role of Retractions in Breathing

When I see a kid that's flaring, I always think about those bronchi-alotic kids. It's unclear to me really clinically looking at them if it's an oxygenation issue or ventilation issue. The concept of closing capacity is something we are taught during residency. Anything that gives a restrictive lung disease will increase your closing capacity. Pneumonia ARDS, whatever you have as well as some common examples such as Pulmonary Arterial Dysplastic Syndromes (PADS) can all lead to breathing problems.
