In 1529, the land grave of Hesse called the Marburg Coliqui to resolve the question of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Luther and his acerbic insulting style ensured that no such reconciliation would occur. Later in 1529, he got one final opportunity to mend the rift, this time with the decidedly less radical Zwingli,. but again refused. In the end, Philip I, Zwingli, and others who might have joined forces were permanently sundered. And yet, even with all that, they somehow broke away from the Church and really broke it as an institution.
