I don't think I noticed any of the seer stones in his face, which makes me believe there may have been some sort of battle in the past. Despite Gail being this brilliantly minded individual, she also is both religious and analytical. She thanks the sleeper when she wins the Imperial math competition set out by Harry Seldin later on. So she hasn't foregone her traditions. She just believes that the people are wrong about what the sleeper wants.
