Having Long Finger Nails in a Stand Up Fight?

Long nails can be used to scratch and claw if need be, so they're not completely useless in that regard. But it doesn't seem like there are a lot of ways to really encourage them back towards a more defensive claw purpose than we would find in other animals. So has danzig never commented on why he got long finger nails? He doesn't say anything about it.
