The Architecture of the Diasporic Mosque
The architecture of the diasporic mosque is an attempt to transmit across this gap and to ground dislocated Muslim communities. As a designer of mosques, I too must take up a position in this process of cultural transmission. So one of the earliest of my built projects was the Chaperan Mosque on Hackney Road in East London. The geometric pattern of the 13th century Anatolian tile is scaled up to become the facade. And here you see the steel lattice infill is a replication of the window tracery of the 1889 Woking Mosque.
