The book of Ruth is the story of a widow, Naomi, who's lost not only her husband, but her sons. She decides to go back to Bethlehem with her daughters-in-law except that she goes back utterly bereft. In those days, there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. And so we all know it as the book of Ruth, because Ruth is just the Hebrew word for friend.
