Marymount represented competition not just in a business sense, but also in terms of attracting settlers. The lifestyle there was to the Puritans, kind of like a siren song leading New immigrants astray. Morton was water in the seeds of a way of life antithetical to everything the Puritans stood for. Allowing anything else to thrive was equivalent to allowing evil to spread.
