In 1981, the Air Force developed a requirement for this ATF to basically take over the airways. In August of 91, the YF 22 was declared the winner. They could carry twice the internal fuel, which means they can fly further and faster as well. And they had 50% more wing area and about 30% greater combat weight. At that time,. the Air Force plan to acquire 648 F 22 operational aircrafts for a measly $86.6 billion with a B. After that, there was like, oh, you know, government spending, and we don't really want to spend all that money.
