The Chain and Dreams are emblematic of the way that Fleetwood Mac as an ensemble would change a song. Lindsay Buckingham's acoustic guitar riff on The Chain is really the defining sound of this song. There's just metal all over the front of the guitar which gives it a sharper, more twangy sound.
