The idea that women, as the those who birth children, are going to be a little more nurturing kind tender and have a bit of more innate, inherent connection to a child. This is associated with some more traditional visions of womanhood and motherhood. But i guess the new york times, and in particular writer named chelsea connibly, are not having that any longer. Apparently, mat maternal instinct is a pernicious tool of the patriarchy. this was something that was invented by men.
