The inception of america's army was predominantly triggered by a 19 97 national research council report that suggested video games were a far better net working tool than defense research expenditures. After this report came out, mike zida, who was the founding director of the modelling virtual environments and simulation at the naval post graduate academy, was tasked with coming up with a pitch for a first person shooter modeled after counter strike. Zida pitched his idea to colonel casey wardinski, who had watched his 17 year old son spend hours in front of his computer screen playing counterstrike. Wardinski said it could kill two birds with one stone, improve civilian opinion about the military and potentially encourage teen age males,
