In the 1950s and 60s some of the early kind of pioneers of psychiatric thought started to notice that there was a group of people that they described as being at the border. And then in the 70s, John Gunderson and his collaborators really through a series of really still important empirical studies, defined the core criteria for diagnosing BPD as we know it today. That got sort of codified in the 1980 third version of the DSM-3.
