The Treadmill Effect
In fog, everything around us actually appears to be moving more slowly than it really is. And we look to be moving more Slowly through the landscape. You see similar things in the white out conditions of snow. The culprit's not often slippery roads or poor visie per se, but low contrast. Drivers may see the back of truck in time, but they think it's going faster than it actually is. They may not break accordingly. We do slightly reduce our speed ind fog, but not by enough to insure that safe margin.
