In 16 forty one the dutch authorities established a market day for new amsterdam, with farmers and native americans arriving to sell their goods. It was so popular that the authorities can acted a public market hall in 16 56. And then two years later, the settlement erected a meat market next to the fort as well. By the 16 eighties, under british rule, these markets would be open to shoppers every day of the week.
