What's the Difference Between AT&T and Universal Service?
When the telephone came around, it instantaneously killed the telegraph, right? Ha! No, not at all. They're in complementary markets. By the First World War, the revenue of the telephone finally equals the post office. That's the 800-pound gorilla. But they were seen as complement, in fact, think of the name of AT&T, the name of the company, American Telephone and Telegraph.
