The middle ages saw suppression of women and homosexuality. Islam was usually illegal in most western christian states throughout the middle ages, although there were some kingdoms that did allow jews and moslems to coexist. Social class and birth were extremely important, and they often could trump nder. A woman who was of high birth, who was the head of a noble family, or who inherited a royal or imperial throne can gain very extensive power.
