The author says social media is not an accurate representation of what the world thinks of you. It's a heavily filtered sort of prism like experience where you're seeing mostly a small group of people with pretty radical views generating most of the content. For some one who's isolated and dabbling in extremism, i think pretty queerly pretty quickly, they can come to confuse extremism with more normal views. We've known about this type of tendency for 50, 60 years - it's called the false consensus effect. And so i think the that social media has just accelerated them.
