The material infrastructure underpinning AI as it currently exists is very much entrenching the interests of a few tech companies at the cost of public harms. We're now in a moment where policymakers are considering different modes of intervention around AI, but without any sort of attachment to the concrete realities and incentive structures that are shaping how these systems are actually being deployed in the world.
