Algeria - A Country That Carries a Coffin on Its Back

Algeria's leading novelist Camal daoud covered the civil war as a young journalist. He says, the islamis against the government was marked by eery echoes of the independence struggle. More recently, since 20 19, the government has faced pro democracy protest from what became known as the hirak movement. Many of the protestors chanted the names of nationalist heroes who fought and often died in the struggle for independence. But camal daud sees this constant reliving of the past as a curse, not a blessing.
