There was a well-established printing economy in Germany at the time, but there was not a mass audience for printed material. Most printers made their money on government documents and things like indulgences. Gutenberg, the guy who invented the thing, went fucking bankrupt. It was very risky to publish new books because no one knew what people wanted to read.
