New Age Travellers and the Battle of the Bean Field
In the sixties, there was a wave of people who transitioned into this sort of hippy life style. A permanently mobile community began to form in vans, buses and caravans. It provoked hostility from neighbors, from villages, from local councils. In 19 80 under the thatcher government,. many of the festivals were prohibited and forcibly shut down. The struggle between the new travellers and the state culminated on june first, 19 85 in the so called battle of the bean field. One police officer was later convicted of malicious injury.
