There is some confusion about exactly where the hangings in Montesville prison took place. A man named Frank Hire was convicted of killing his wife and sentenced to death. He said that it fell to the floor with a sick thud, landing right in front of the gathered audience. The executions after that were all conducted privately, lest anything else unsightly take place.
