Norman Borlaug was the crop breeder who sparked the improvements in yields that led to the Green Revolution. He worked originally in Mexico, so maize and wheat were the first crops to get his attention. cassava is actually a root crop from Brazil, which they call manioc,. it's not even an African crop, but it's mostly grown in Africa.
