The Rise and Fall of the London Fish Wives

The fish wife is a hard drinking, coarse mouth, boisterous kind of woman who sells fish or shellfish on the streets of the city. She's particularly associated with Billingsgate fish market and later becomes a slang term for kind of rude language. But gradually as the centuries move on more and more men become involved in the street trades. And it's partly because you've just got a kind of growth in the poor working population. Those who are looking at forms of casual labor and more men get sucked into this street trading seems a decent way to keep ahead of the water.
