Is There Still a Hierarchy?
The classic hierarchical view that's held by neuroscientists and by machine learning is wrong. Every stage of the processing step, every part in thinking about neocortex are building complete models - not just extracting small features. Even a single cortical region can learn complete models of sensory input. But we still have a hierarchy. So what's going on in the hierarchy? Well, we don't really know.
