The War on Jeju Island
In April 1948, a month before the Korean elections, a guerrilla war broke out on Jeju Island off the coast of South Korea. What began as a local revolt involving some 350 people ended with the deaths of 10% of the island's population. The US military government called Jeju, among other things, one large nest of communists and a cancer of the trouble in South Korea.
