The Stoic Life of Seneca

Stoicism was more nuanced than for instance a pecuring in this respect. One of the fundamental tenets of stoicism is that you do have to spurn riches, but that doesn't mean necessarily you have to withdraw the private life. Seneca and the stoics think actually you're perfectly right to engage in public life,. It is part of your duty to the broader community of which you're part. But ultimately, Seneca is the rich man espousing philosophy of poverty; he doesn't get off the charge of hypocrisy for me.
